Workshops and Continuing Education

Workshops are a proven way to keep on top of developments in the health and fitness industry. Our workshops are 2, 3, 4 or 6 hours in length depending on the topic. We understand that it can be difficult to find the time to enroll in a workshop while maintaining a regular client roster. That’s why we schedule our workshops on weekend afternoons or weekday evenings – off-peak hours in the fitness industry. Occasionally, we’ll also schedule a workshop on a Friday afternoon.

Exams

Exams must be taken within six months of the completing your last STOTT Education course. We encourage students to take some time following the course to practice and synthesize the information prior to taking the exam. You are welcome to take the exam immediately following the course if you and your instructor agree that you are ready. Depending on your training and certification plans, you may choose from the following exams:

- Mat
- Reformer (for those who have taken Reformer Certification only)
- Mat and Reformer
- Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Barrels

Please note that the exam material is cumulative. There is an additional fee associated with each of these exams not included in the course fee.

You may also choose to be examined at Level One (Essential and Intermediate) or Level Two (Essential, Intermediate and Advanced). If you choose to be examined at Level One (written and practical components) and at a later time wish to examine and upgrade to a Level Two Certification (practical component only) there is a separate fee.

Note: Full certification requires successful completion of the Injuries and Special Populations course in addition to successful completion of Level Two exam for Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Barrels.

The written exam must be conducted in a facility where the exam can be monitored. The practical component can be conducted either in a studio setting with an examiner, or via video tape - guidelines for submission are available from the studio director.

What to expect in your practical exam

- Mat – 1 hour duration
- Mat and Reformer – 1.5 hour duration
- Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Barrel – 2 hour duration

The initial few minutes of the exam are dedicated to asking the appropriate questions of your subject and acquiring knowledge of your subjects history, physical condition, and goals.

The next 5-10 minutes of your practical exam are dedicated to the postural analysis. Begin by describing what you hope to accomplish through a postural assessment. Proceed from head to foot describing what you see first from an anterior view, then from a side view, and finally from a posterior view. Remember to use proper anatomical reference throughout your postural analysis and verbalize what you are seeing for the benefit of the examiner. With your subject’s permission, feel free to palpate bony landmarks to help in your assessment. Also, feel free to ask your subject to roll down through each vertebrae if it will better help you to analyze the spine or to lift pant legs if it helps to better analyze the knees, ankles and feet.

Conclude your postural assessment by summarizing what muscles you hope to strengthen and what postural misalignment you hope to correct in the workout you are about to program.

The remainder of the exam is dedicated to taking your subject through an appropriate workout. The following areas are judged:

Teaching manner and energy: attitude, motivational and verbalization skills.

Application of the basic principles: STOTT PILATES places particular emphasis on your ability to communicate the importance of the basic principles to your subject. Your examiner will be listening carefully to your explanations. Be sure to describe the purpose and the importance of each principle. Throughout the workout continue to correct and cue posture using imagery, verbal cues, visual cues and touch to aid the subject in correcting their alignment.

Knowledge of relevant repertoire of exercises: movement patterns and breathing patterns. Know when to exhale and when to inhale. Know how many repetitions of each exercise are to be executed.

Adaptation of the material to the individual: Appropriate modifications, choice of exercise, appropriate pace and appropriate cues for that individual.

Rhythm and pace: Making the workout fluid, using transitions from one exercise to another and keeping a pace that challenges the individual without losing form and effectiveness or overexerting.

What to expect in your written exam

The written exam is designed to test your knowledge of the musculature of the body: Origins, insertions, and actions of the muscles. As well as being asked to talk about the major muscular contractions happening in certain exercises, you will be asked to identify muscles pictured in a series of diagrams. Studio Praxis recommends purchasing Bryan Edwards Flash Anatomy Packs as study aids. The images you see in the Flash Pack Series are the same images you will encounter in your exam.

While there is no time limit for the written exam, we generally find it takes students 3-5 hours to complete.

Tips for success

Both exams place a strong emphasis on anatomy knowledge. You will need to have an in-depth understanding of anatomy in order to pass both components of the exam. To brush on anatomy we recommend the following:

- Study from "Muscular Flash Pack" by Bryan Edward s Publishing available at Studio Praxis.
- Review of Andrew Biel’s Trail Guide to the Body. It’s an excellent reference from which to study and it’s great to keep on hand. Available at Studio Praxis.
- Book a mock exam or one-hour review sessions with an Instructor Trainer by calling 514 486 9949.

Know your basic principles
